10 Autumn Slow Living Habits I’m Actually Doing This Year

By

The kettle clicks off.

You pour your tea, wrap your hands around the warm cup, and pause for a moment.

The window is open just enough for a cool autumn breeze to drift in.. The air feels different.. crisp, quiet, softer somehow. Outside, the day is beginning, but for these few seconds, there is nowhere else to be..

And I know.

Autumn is coming.

It always seems to arrive just after my birthday, not with a dramatic change, but in these tiny things you almost miss.. softer mornings, earlier sunsets, cooler floors under your feet, and that sudden urge to make a cup of tea and stay home a little longer.

No pumpkins or orangy stuffs everywhere. No elaborate autumn makeover.

Just the season quietly changing the way an ordinary day feels..

I’m not planning an elaborate autumn makeover or turning into someone who wakes up at 4:30 a.m. to journal beside a perfectly arranged pumpkin.. or whatever..

I’m just doing a small autumn reset.

Real life is still happening here .. school at 7:30, a pre-teen, gym, laundry that apparently reproduces overnight and the usual household chaos. So these are the autumn slow living habits I’m actually going to try..

1. Wake Up a Little Earlier

I’m waking up at 5 a.m. this autumn.

But please don’t take that as an instruction. Wake up at your own sweet time.. just try getting up a little earlier than your usual time.

For me, those extra minutes mean sitting quietly before the school-day madness begins. Fifteen minutes of peace before I hear the first “Mammmmaaaa !!!”

Honestly, that little pause feels like luxury.

2. Take the Longer Route to the Gym

In summer, I take the quickest route to the gym because it’s hot and I have no interest in sightseeing while melting🙄

Autumn is different.

I actually enjoy taking a different, slightly longer route. The same streets suddenly look different when the air is cooler and the trees start changing.

Sometimes the journey is part of the workout.

3. Stop Filling Every Quiet Moment

I’m trying to leave some silence alone.

No phone. No scrolling. No immediately finding something to clean, organise or accomplish.

Just sitting.

It sounds ridiculously simple until you realise how rarely we actually do it.

4. Read Before Bed

Autumn evenings make me want to pick up a book instead of endlessly scrolling.

I’m keeping this very achievable: a few pages before bed.

Not 50 pages. Not “finish a book every week.”

Even five pages count.

5. Walk Without Calling It Exercise

One of my favourite slow living ideas for autumn is simply going for a walk without giving it a job.

No calorie target. No step competition. No “I must burn X calories.”

Just walking.

Cooler air, changing leaves, quieter streets and that lovely feeling of being outside without being in a hurry..

6. Bring Autumn Into the House

I don’t need to buy an entirely new autumn personality.

I can open the windows on a crisp morning, bring in a few branches or flowers, change the bedding, move things around and let the changing light do most of the decorating..

And yes, I’ll still light my candles because apparently I have a reputation to maintain.

7. Move My Body Without Punishing It

I’m still going to the gym, but I’m changing the way I think about exercise.

I want to feel stronger, healthier and more energetic .. not like I’m being punished for eating dinner.

Some days will be proper workouts. Some days will be walking. Some days will be less.

That still counts.

8. Make Little Pockets of Quiet

There are always phones, messages, television, SCHOOL, chores and someone asking where something is.

So I’m deliberately creating little pockets where none of it gets my attention.

Even 20 quiet minutes can make the whole day feel different.

9. Do a Small Sunday Reset

I want Sundays to help my week, not become another day of chores.

I’ll look at the week ahead, organise a few things, think about meals and decide what actually needs doing.

Then I’m stopping.

A reset should make life lighter.. not steal your Sunday.

10. Notice the Ordinary Stuff

This might be my biggest autumn self-care habit.

Notice the first morning that feels properly cool.

The changing light at 6 p.m.

Leaves under my shoes.

The first evening when I don’t need the air conditioning..

The smell of something cooking.

A quiet house.

These are tiny things, but most of life happens in tiny things we are too busy to notice.

My Autumn Reset

I’m not trying to become a completely different person this autumn.

I just want to be a little more present in my own life.

Move more. Read more. Walk more. Rest properly. Spend less time rushing.

Because autumn slow living, for me, isn’t about creating a perfect, picturesque life.

It’s about actually being there for the real one.

Even when there’s laundry.

Even when the school morning is chaos.

Even when dinner is very much not Instagram-worthy.

Even when I’ve walked into the kitchen and forgotten why.

Especially then.

Autumn doesn’t need to be perfect.

It just needs to be noticed.

Here’s to slower days, softer moments,
and finding magic in the everyday.

Your introduction completely captured the shift in the air, Dolly. What I appreciate most about your reset is how realistic it is. Creating small, twenty-minute pockets of quiet feels like an achievable luxury we can all fit in between the daily chaos. This post is a lovely reminder to slow down, breathe, and just be present for the life we are actually living.

Your point about leaving silence alone instead of immediately filling it with scrolling or chores really hit home for me. It’s so true that the magic of the season is found in the ordinary, tiny shifts. Here’s to a cosy, un-picturesque, and deeply noticed autumn

Walking without making it “exercise” really struck a chord with me. I’ve started taking little walks just because I fancy getting out. No step counting, no rushing about just a stroll, having a nosy at the gardens, watching the leaves change and saying hello to whoever I bump into. It does me the world of good.

Oh, I do love this. I’m 70 now and have lived on my own for a good few years, and I think you’ve captured something here that I’ve only really come to appreciate with age. Autumn doesn’t need all the fuss, does it? I’m quite happy with a cup of tea, the heating on low, a good book and a bit of peace and quiet. I think I’ve finally realised that an ordinary day can be a very good day indeed. This was a lovely read and has made me look forward to autumn arriving properly.

I really enjoyed reading this because it feels so much more realistic than all those “perfect autumn” routines we usually see everywhere. As a mum, I honestly don’t have the time or energy to completely reinvent my home and routine every season.

Most days are school runs, getting everyone ready, work, laundry, meals, and then wondering where the day even went! That’s why I loved the idea of finding little pockets of autumn in the middle of all that chaos making a warm cup of tea, opening the window to that cooler air, having a slower morning when possible, or simply sitting for a few quiet minutes after the kids are settled. Those tiny moments really do make such a difference. And I completely agree that autumn has this way of making your mind feel fresher. There’s something about the cooler air, earlier evenings and quieter feeling in the day that makes me want to slow down a little and stop rushing through everything. This post honestly made me want to embrace the season in a much simpler way this year Dolly. I love your writing and your choice of words just makes me slow down.

Dolly after very long you came back . You need to write more .A lovely reminder that slow living doesn’t have to mean changing your whole life. Sometimes it’s just giving your mind a little room to breathe. 🍂☕️

There is something about slowing down, even for a few minutes, that makes my mind feel so much fresher. I often find myself moving from one thing to another without really stopping like school, work, chores, messages, the endless little things that need doing or and before I know it, my head feels completely full. What I loved most about this post is that the habits don’t feel unrealistic or like another list of things we have to achieve. The idea of simply sitting in silence, taking a longer walk, reading a few pages before bed, or noticing the cooler air really spoke to me. These are such small things, but somehow they create a little space in your mind. I especially loved the thought of not filling every quiet moment. I think we are so used to reaching for our phones or finding something productive to do that we forget how refreshing it can be to simply sit and do nothing. Even twenty quiet minutes can make me feel like I’ve pressed a little reset button in my head. And I completely agree about noticing the ordinary things the change in the light, the cooler mornings, the smell of something cooking, a quiet house. They may seem insignificant, but those are often the moments that make a season memorable. This post has honestly made me want to slow down a little, breathe, clear my head and stop feeling like every minute needs to be productive. Maybe that’s what I love about autumn most. It somehow makes me want to come back to myself.

A warm cup of tea, cooler mornings, an early evening, and just letting the day be a little quieter. 🍂 I’m really trying to make this autumn feel less about doing and more about simply being.
