7 Simple Daily Habits That Make Life Feel Slower, Calmer, and More Intentional

By

Wouldn’t it be lovely if we always made the right choices without effort?

Reached for a banana instead of biscuits, went to bed on time, or kindly declined that overscheduled dinner plan? But let’s be honest.. life rarely plays out like a Pinterest board.

Different seasons bring different chaos. When your child’s young, uninterrupted sleep is luxury. When work piles up, even boiling pasta can feel like an achievement. And when you’re not working at all (hi, that’s me!), the to-do list still never ends..

I’m Dolly.. currently unemployed, very happily so, and fully embracing my role as a full-time mum to one very energetic boy. I’ve also recently become a blogger. Not the kind with a YouTube channel and glowing ring lights—just words, typed out in-between snack demands and laundry loads. And honestly? I love it here.

I’m deeply into slow living—but in a realistic way. No countryside cottage. No sourdough starters. Just small, intentional tweaks that make daily life feel calmer, richer, and a little less frantic.

And no, I didn’t skip the Prime Day sales. I shopped a lot. Storage baskets, a cosy dress, and yes, a cookie box that no one needs but everyone deserves. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s deliveries!

Let’s get into the 7 daily habits that are helping me live with a bit more peace (and a bit less panic).

🥣 1. Swap Mindless Munching for Mindful Snacking

You know the scene—standing in the kitchen, eating a cookie you didn’t even register. Been there. So now I try to create snacks that feel thoughtful and satisfying:

• Almonds with dried cranberries or any berries available

• Apple slices with peanut butter

• Greek yogurt with cinnamon and dark chocolate chips

They’re still quick, still delicious..

📖 2. Read While Walking (Yes, Really)

Scrolling Reels on the sofa? Tempting. But I’ve started walking slowly on the treadmill while reading on my Kindle. It’s now my favourite multitasking ritual: gentle movement + juicy fiction = bliss.

No dramatic sweat session, just 20 minutes of peaceful reading in motion. Best chapters often read in peace..

📝 3. Switch to a Real Recipe Notebook

Cooking while unlocking your phone every five minutes? Exhausting. So I’ve gone back to basics and started jotting down my go-to vegetarian recipes in a proper notebook.

Think:

• Roasted veggie burgers

• Chickpea salad

• Spinach lasagne

• Oat banana pancakes

It’s screen-free, calming, and dare I say, a bit romantic.

🎶 4. Trade Background Noise for Peaceful Vibes

Some days I blast chill playlists.. soft jazz, acoustic covers, or instrumental folk. Other days, I crave pure silence: windows open, kettle bubbling, my ychild mumbling something about Minecraft in the next room.

Turns out, quiet has a soundtrack of its own. And it’s oddly healing.

🪴 5. Declutter Instead of Over-Decorating

Yes, I bought more baskets than I care to admit during Prime Day. But I’ve also learned that nothing breathes life into a room quite like clearing it.

Instead of adding more stuff, I wipe down a surface and add something simple:

A small vase of greenery

• Fresh herbs in a jar

• Even a single branch from the small garden

It feels calm, chic, and refreshingly adult.

🧁 6. Make Something Homemade (Even If It’s Tiny)

Ordering takeaway is valid. Necessary, even. But lately, I’ve found comfort in home-cooked vegetarian meals like:

• Creamy lentil soup

• Pasta with roasted veggies

Vegetable wraps

• Couscous bowls with lemon dressing

Once in a month, I bake a little treat.. banana bread, muffins, oatmeal cookies (my son removes all raisins, of course). It’s become tradition, and I honestly love it more than I expected.

🌿 7. Step Outside Before You Lose It

Scrolling through sales and calling it “rest”? Guilty. But stepping outside is the reset I never regret. Whether it’s a short walk, watering plants, or just sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea—it grounds me.

You don’t need a forest. Just the willingness to look up, breathe in, and be still for a moment.

💬 One Last Thought.. You don’t need to overhaul your life to feel better. Just trade one rushed choice for a slower one. That’s how peace sneaks in—through snacks, soft music, green branches in old jars, and the quiet joy of doing a little less.

With love (and a dozen Prime parcels incoming),

Dolly

Well would you look at this little gem! ✨ Stumbled across your blog this morning with my tea in hand, and I swear, it felt like a hug in words. Every habit you mentioned—so simple, so grounding. I could nearly hear the leaves rustling just reading it! Autumn’s just around the corner here and oh, it’s me absolute favourite—the cosy jumpers, the long walks under amber trees, and that crisp chill that makes everything feel a wee bit magical. Can’t wait to put some of these lovely habits into practice as the season changes. You’ve truly made my morning, love. 🍁

    Warm wishes from Ireland,
