My Personal Journey to Slow Living: From Burnout to Balance

By

I’ve always dreamed of writing. Not just blogs, but a book. The kind you flip through in a cozy café..

But for now, I’m starting with this blog.. a stepping stone to my ultimate dream.

This blog isn’t about making money (though if someone wants to pay me for my musings not monetary but by inviting me in some new country I won’t object haha !! )

It’s about connecting with people like me those caught in life’s whirlwind, secretly longing to slow down and breathe.

The Woman I Was: Juggling Independence and Burnout

Work Life Balance

A few years ago, I was the picture of a modern, independent woman.

Imagine this: an assistant professor, reasonably good at her job but lacking the fire-breathing “strict teacher” persona.

Though I didn’t mind.. I had bigger goals. Coming from a modern yet somewhere conservative family that believed women belonged in the kitchen, I wanted to prove I could break the mold and “be the man of the house.”

My life was busy. At 2.5 months postpartum, I returned to work, juggling academia and motherhood like an over-caffeinated circus performer. I chased financial independence relentlessly, working long hours and burning myself out.

Finding balance in my life

When my son needed more attention, I quit my college job. Soon after leaving my college position, I took up a teaching job in a school and worked part-time as a guest lecturer in colleges. I’d return home and dive straight into taking tuitions for students of all ages.

While I enjoyed teaching, the long hours drained me. The school job felt especially overwhelming, and I struggled to find peace.

Thanks to my dear husband who realised this more quickly and asked me to quit.

Eventually, I quit teaching at both the school and college levels to focus more on my son and personal well-being.

Finding balance, clarity, and purpose.

But teaching was in my blood.

I began taking tuitions again and even started teaching English to women in their 50s. One of them became a dear friend and my walking buddy.

Teaching these women was deeply satisfying and gave me a sense of purpose I had missed. Yet, despite all the fulfillment, I realized I wasn’t giving my 100% to my son.

Financial freedom was still my mantra, even as I pushed myself to exhaustion.

And then…I stopped.

Hitting Pause: Discovering Slow Living

Two years ago, we moved to a new city, and for the first time, I quit everything—teaching, working, and hustling. I focused on my son, became a homebody, joined the gym, cooked elaborate meals, and indulged in every binge-worthy Netflix and Amazon Prime series.

From the outside, it seemed perfect. But inside? Something was missing.

I wasn’t the independent woman I used to be. My husband’s income was sufficient or I can say more than enough , but I felt like I was losing myself.

Then, I discovered slow living—not the kind where you abandon everything and move to the countryside, but a real, intentional way of living. It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but little by little, I began letting go of toxic habits, focusing on what truly mattered, and finding balance.

Why Slow Living Matters

Today, slow living hasn’t solved all my problems, but it’s given me clarity, purpose, and a renewed sense of self. It’s about:

• Letting go of toxic pressures.

• Reconnecting with your passions and values.

• Living intentionally, not reactively.

Now, I’m here, writing this blog to share my journey and connect with others who feel overwhelmed, lost, or just in need of a reset.

Welcome to My Corner of the Internet

If you’ve ever felt like you’re running on autopilot, this blog is for you. Whether you’re seeking balance, clarity, or even just a good binge-watch recommendation (trust me, I’ve got plenty), we’re in this together. Slow living isn’t a quick fix, but it’s a path worth exploring.

So, let’s figure this out together.

I have a one-year-old daughter, and I can relate to how you managed everything – balancing workload, office responsibilities, motherhood, being a new mum, and your job. I truly admire you and hope to be like you later in my life.
