January To-Do List: Baby Steps for a Brilliant Start

By

Ah, January.

That awkward time when we’re supposed to leap out of bed on January 1st, ready to conquer the world, while reality is more…

I was stumbling out of bed at 10 AM and wondering where the kettle is. Yep, that’s how my year began. But instead of spiralling into self-loathing for “starting late,” I made a carrot cake. Because, let’s be honest, cake is the answer to most of life’s problems.

This isn’t a blog about becoming perfect—it’s about real-life, baby steps, and the joy of starting where you are.

So, whether you’re lounging in PJs, still in bed with your cup of tea figuring should I relax or be productive today as it’s Day ONE or smashing goals already, here’s a January to-do list with a side of wit and warmth to keep you going.

1. Set Goals You Won’t Regret by February

We all love a good resolution, but let’s be real—going from “I eat biscuits for breakfast” to “I’ll run 5k every day” is setting yourself up for failure. Instead, go easy. My first goal?

Bake a carrot cake (tick). Next? Walk 5,000 steps a day (still working on it).

Set goals that make sense for you, like finishing that book you started last spring or drinking more water instead of only tea.

Progress, not perfection.

2. Drag Yourself Outside—It’s Good for You

Look, I know it’s cold. The duvet is warm, the warm food is calling, and leaving the house feels like a chore. But trust me, even 10 minutes of fresh air can do wonders.

On January 2nd, I will be dragging myself out for a stroll (mainly to walk off all that cake) and will find myself smiling at the crisp air.

Nature is free therapy—take advantage of it.

3. Declutter Your Space (And Your Head)

I started with my wardrobe, which looked like it had been hit by a tornado of bad decisions. Anything I hadn’t worn since my 30s went into the donation pile. One drawer down, twenty to go. Decluttering feels good—like you’re making space for the year ahead. And don’t stop at your stuff; declutter the people in your life who leave you feeling drained.

Keep the ones who make you laugh till your sides hurt.

4. Celebrate the Little Wins

The New Year doesn’t have to mean waving goodbye to all things festive. I kept my fairy lights up because, frankly, they make me happy. And when I pulled off my carrot cake on January 1st (no burnt edges, thank you very much), I celebrated with an extra slice.

Find the magic in small things—tea in your favourite mug, a quiet moment with a good book, or just not burning dinner.

5. Move Your Body (No Lycra Required)

You don’t have to become a gym junkie to move more. I started with a few stretches while waiting for my cake to bake. Add in a quick walk or a spontaneous dance in your living room—movement doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Besides, a little exercise balances out the cake, right?

Science probably agrees.

6. Prioritise Your Mental Health

Let’s not sugarcoat it—January can feel overwhelming. Journaling helps me process all the post-holiday clutter in my brain. And when life gets stressful, I take five deep breaths (sometimes while hiding in the kitchen).

So be kind to yourself.

7. Try Something New (Even if It’s Just a Recipe)

Starting the year by learning something is oddly satisfying. My “new thing” was the carrot cake, and trust me, it was a gamble. I didn’t burn it (win!) and even grated the carrots without shredding my fingers. It’s not about perfection; it’s about trying. Next on my list?

Mastering the Art of Staying Calm During That “Special” Time of the Month.

8. Write Down What You’re Grateful For

Each night, I jot down three things I’m thankful for. On January 1st, it was: 1) Carrot cake. 2) Not waking up with an alarm. 3) Posted my Blog. Gratitude doesn’t have to be deep or poetic—sometimes it’s just appreciating the little joys, like finding matching socks.

9. Set Intentions, Not Rigid Resolutions

Resolutions are like that dress you bought on sale—looks good on paper, doesn’t quite fit in reality. Instead, I’ve set intentions for the year: more joy, more self-care, and more baking experiments that (hopefully) don’t involve setting off the smoke alarm. What’s your vibe for 2024? Start there.

10. Give Yourself a Break

Day 1 isn’t about getting it all right—it’s about starting. I woke up late, baked a cake instead of hitting the gym, and enjoyed every bite. And guess what? The world didn’t end.

Be kind to yourself, celebrate the small wins, and remember—you’re allowed to go at your own pace.

Still struggling for my page to look perfect !!

The Bottom Line

January isn’t about turning into a superhuman overnight; it’s about laying the groundwork for the year ahead. Whether you’re smashing your goals, enjoying a slice of cake, or just managing to drag yourself out of bed, you’re doing great.

Here’s to a year of small wins, big laughs, and maybe a few more cakes. Cheers !! And REMEMBER ⤵️
